Ok, you people DO realise that Gibson have ZERO quality control these days?....some of the complaints i've heard lately, holy shit....i'd say they will fold soon if they are feeling the need to cut corners on $3000 guitars. Something is seriously wrong at Gibson.

Gibson are now sloppily made, overpriced junk. Have been for a while. Get a PRS.

You can stick your PRS. I would still choose a Gibson over anything. You should be able to spot a lemon before you purchase the bloody thing regardless of which brand from the shop & if you do don't buy it. Gibson's sloppy is most brands well made... Yeh I love Gibson.... Dude I don't even believe them websites you linked too, probably just fender fags having a whinge... ha ha ha... MATTY!!!!

Yeah, see, like many people you just have no idea how bad they have gotten.

"Gibson", the name, will sell their guitars to the kind of idiots who don't notice or care about sub-standard workmanship, materials and build quality.

It's fuckin' sad.

I admit I'm a little like that. I've always wanted a Les Paul; and after playing a mates LP (which was some strange all-black series that is around 2x the weight of than the average LP) I really want the huge fuck-off sound and resonance an ultra-heavy bodied guitar gives. A LP Studio wont cut it.

When I'm less broke I'll start doing my research into alternatives. The bottom line is I just want a guitar with stupid amounts of weight behind it. The sound of the Gibson I played is just out of this world.

You may want to look into a Gibson Explorer or even the older Ibanez Destroyers.

those things don't sound like les pauls. they're nice metal guitars but they don't have the same character as a good lester.

xenomorph is correct. most gibsons suck absolute balls nowadays, and epiphone are toys.

go to global vintage in annandale. that place has some lovely japanese copies that not only wont break the bank, they'll also be well constructed. unless you plan on actually paying retail for a gibson, in which case go for your life, you'll just need to try 10-20 of them before you find a decent one and it will cost 4 grand.

i wouldnt spend 4k on anything but a custom guitar but thats just me.

i picked up an orville (japanese gibson licenced) les paul from global vintage recently. its a gorgeous cherry sunburst 59 copy, lovely light piece of mahogany with superb resonance and tonal character. its dripping with les paul personality, and the low end is nothing short of godly... i'd be happy to put it up against any new $3500 GLPS.

Best of all, it was 1200. And the shop rules. Rene who owns it, is honest to the point of bagging out guitars and effects that he has for sale. This has got to be commended.

Old mate cold_dark owns some pretty wicked guitars and certainly knows his shit, but yeah you're right. Gibson have been on a steady downhill for years now. There's massive problems with the current CEO's who have no idea on how to run things. There are a lot of upset staff at the Gibo factory and it's very apparent in the guitars they are producing. I've seen some shockers the past few years, $5k for a guitar with bubbling paint jobs, bridges installed backwards etc. I hope they pick their game up.

Managed to get a pretty well build Explorer Standard a couple of years back... not sure if it was worth the sticker price of $2700 but it is a very nice playing and sounding guitar.

HOW I came to possess it is a decent story though...

Years ago I picked up an old Jackon PS-6T (Performer Series Kelly) at a pawn shop. The hardware was already a little rusted and the paint job was slightly chipped, but it was $600, I had $600, and it looked awesome.

Fast forward many years of abuse and I took it in to the music store to be serviced. Took them a couple of months to get back to me that it was complete, and then to repay in kind it took me a couple of months to get around to picking it up and giving them their money.

When I did get there it was gone. A week later still not found. Two weeks after that the manager called me and offered to order in a replacement Kelly for me. I told him I wasn't interested and the newer equivalent Kellys are pieces of shit in my opinion. He invited me in to take a look at what else he had, and when I got in asked how I felt about a Gibson Explorer as it was a 'similar' shape. I said I didn't think Gibson put their name on any $1200 guitars and he said to let him worry about that, and pointed me to aformentioned Explorer hanging on the wall.

I was skeptical. I was aware of Gibson's flagging reputation and I prefer a 24 fret neck, but when I played it I was very content to take it home. It sounds dark and heavy, plays really well and is perfectly balanced... although there are some minor imperfections with the finish.

As I said, not a $2700 guitar by any stretch but definately still a worthy instrument. If I came accross another Explorer or a Flying V for the right price I'd definately be interested - but I'd want to give it a thorough look over and play the shit out of it first.

These are the 2 set ups i use.
FDM - Beat to shit Gibsobn Explorer ( had a headstock and neck break), or occasionally modded squire tele, into Modded Boss SD-1- BYOC Leeds Fuzz - Wah - Small Stone - Space Echo reissue, then Laney AOR 50 and Orange AD-30 - 2 Marshall cabs.
Daredevil - 1968 SG Special or 73 Les Paul Deluxe - same pedals and either a WASP - Holden XL or Marshall 1974 SuperBass ( on the occasion we play somewhere bigger).

Probably should get a photo when i actually get it all in the same spot.

I ended up getting an Eastwood Ultra LP (Ovation Ultra LP copy). Fantastic guitar, especially for the price.

Adrift for Days: Eastwood Ultra LP > Eden Electronics DaMOAF > Earthquaker Devices Phase Machine > 70s Colorsound Wah > Boss DD-20 Gigadelay > Earthquaker Devices Modulated Delay Machine > Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+ > ENGL Screamer > Fender Supersonic 4x10.

Serious Beak (ex-Ebolie): Same kinda deal but with my Hamer XT-Standard Korina or Jackson + a Boss Noise Suppressor.

Will hopefully soon own an original Sunn Model T or a Diezel VH-4... I also need a 2x15" guitar cab... and an original Roland RE-201 Space Echo... and a Seppuku FX Octave Drone... and an MI Audio Boost'n'Buff... and a Seppuku Repeater... and a Loopmaster 4... I'm fucked. No home-buying for me.
